On 16 May, the mountains of Bizkaia will host the Women at the Peak event.

Bizkaia has recently been awarded the European Region of Sport 2026 distinction, an award that will allow the region to have an exceptional year in terms of sport and, of course, in terms of mountaineering as well. This designation’s aim is to highlight the sport already practised in Bizkaia from an open and inclusive perspective, paying special attention to promoting the active presence of women in the sports system.

In this context, the Equality Committee of Bizkaia’s Mountaineering Federation (BMF-FVM) will participate in the “Women at the Peak / Mujeres en la cima / Emakumeak gailurretan” activity, which will be held on 16 May. The initiative aims to fill the peaks of Bizkaia (from Gorbea to Pagasarri, from Anboto to Kolitza) with women, doing so to make the presence of women in mountaineering more visible and to assert their place on our summits.

We will climb for those who came before us, for those who are to come, and because our presence is more visible when we are together. Age and experience do not matter: what matters is taking the step and doing this together.

We will have to choose a mountain in Bizkaia near our municipality and climb to the summit in groups of at least five women. At 12:00 we will fill the peaks with women and make our presence known on the mountains with photos and videos that we will share on our social networks.

A symbolic contribution of one euro has been established to formalise registration and guarantee the commitment to participate in the march. In addition, all participating women will receive a Buff to help them remember this great day for females in sport.

The gift is subject to availability and will be handed out while supplies last. Once stocks are depleted, the gift cannot be guaranteed, despite one’s having taken part in the march.

Participants will be subsequently contacted to inform them of the place and method for collecting their gift.
