Bizkaia hosts the 43rd edition of the School Games finals in May

Around 7,000 boys and girls are taking part in the Bizkaia School Games finals, which will be held throughout May in various municipalities across the region and will feature a total of 35 sporting disciplines.

The 43rd edition of the Bizkaia School Games finals began on 9 May, organised by the Sports Service of the Bizkaia Provincial Council in collaboration with the region’s sports federations. The competitions will take place over three consecutive weekends - 9 and 10, 16 and 17, and 23 and 24 May - in different locations across Bizkaia, with the participation of around 7,000 children.

In total, 35 finals will be contested in various disciplines, including athletics, basketball, handball, football, pelota, volleyball, txikibox, heziki, herri kirolak, rhythmic gymnastics, karate, taekwondo, swimming, tennis, rowing, canoeing and rugby, among others. The School Games finals provide a space for participants to come together and connect, where they can demonstrate their sporting skills and highlight the values of educational sport. Furthermore, the use of the Basque language and respect for the environment will be encouraged in all activities.

With 43 editions under its belt, the Bizkaia School Games have established themselves as one of the school sports initiatives with the longest history in the region, bringing together thousands of children every year. In this edition, and thanks to the collaboration of local councils, the finals will be held in the municipalities of Arrigorriaga, Basauri, Bermeo, Bilbao, Durango, Erandio, Galdakao, Gernika-Lumo, Getxo, Iurreta, Mallabia, Ondarroa, Plentzia, Portugalete, Santurtzi, Sestao, Zalla and Zierbena.

School Sport 2025-2026

During the current academic year, the school sport programme of the Bizkaia Provincial Council offers a total of 54 competitive activities and 23 introductory and recreational activities, which are delivered through 542 sessions, with 8,754 places available. These figures represent an increase of 600 places compared to the previous year, with the aim of facilitating access to regular participation in sport for a greater number of children.

Arrizabalaga highlighted the high level of participation in school sport in Bizkaia, which continues to grow year after year. In the last academic year, the programme brought together more than 42,000 schoolchildren and, for the current year, the programme is expected to reach nearly 46,000 registrations. The Bizkaia Provincial Council will allocate an investment of 2,411,000 euros to the development of school sport.
