Detail

As part of the Bizkaia Provincial Council’s Kirolur Programme (Bizkaia, European Region of Sport 2026), and within the context of the European meeting of AEJeST on the morning of 15 March, Bilbao’s Plaza de las Mujeres will host the “Munduko Kirolak / World Sports” day. This is a day with traditional games and sports from different migrant communities living in Bilbao and Bizkaia. The aim is to promote interculturality and highlight the richness that comes from sharing spaces and interacting through different traditional games and sports.

The event will showcase traditional sports and games from Bizkaia and the Basque Country, as well as from other communities such as Cameroon, Algeria, Morocco, Bolivia, and Asturias. The objective is to foster interculturality, cohesion, and cooperation through participation in traditional games and sports — and to increase their visibility.

The event will begin at 12:00 noon and will consist of an hour of demonstrations about different traditional games and sports. From 1:00 p.m. onwards, the activity will be open to participation so that the attending public can take part and experience the sports for themselves.

Exhibitions

Sustabiz Fundazioa will present a special aizkolaritza (Basque woodchopping) demonstration, featuring a specific discipline considered to be the origin of the modern version of the sport. This involves cutting a log vertically at a height of five metres, a variety of the sport practised by very few kirolaris (Basque rural sport athletes). A spectacle is certainly guaranteed.

The Cameroon Association of the Basque Country will present a demonstration of Cameroonian wrestling. They will also highlight their work promoting gender equality by encouraging women to participate in this sport, which is traditionally forbidden to women in Cameroon.

The Agiantza Association, whose aim is to raise awareness about social disadvantages and support the most societally disadvantaged people in Bilbao and the surrounding mining area, will showcase traditional games from Algeria, Morocco, and Bolivia. The aim is to create a fun and participatory space where coexistence between cultures is promoted through sport.

The 6 Conceyos Association of Asturias will also participate with a discipline similar to trontza (Basque log-sawing ), but with a more playful character. In addition, Bilboko Esperantza Pilota Kluba will revive an ancestral form of Basque pelota known as pasaka.
