Bizkaia will experience a historic year for its sports system in 2026 following its designation as a European Region of Sport by ACES Europe. Under the slogan Bizkaia Kirolur, the territory is preparing for 12 months in which, beyond major events, the real focus will be on the sporting fabric that makes everyday physical activity possible.

The General Deputy, Elixabete Etxanobe, accompanied by the Deputy of Basque Language, Culture and Sports, Leixuri Arrizabalaga, officially launched the Bizkaia Kirolur year at an institutional event attended by a wide range of representatives from the territory’s sports sector.

Throughout 2026, the Bizkaia Provincial Council wishes to recognise and thank all the people and stakeholders that make up the Bizkaia sports system, including clubs, federations, coaching and technical staff, volunteers, families, professional and grassroots athletes, and to reinforce the message on which the Bizkaia Provincial Council has been working in recent years, the importance of sport in our lives, at every stage of life and for everyone, regardless of age, gender, ability or socio-economic status.

In addition to the traditional competitions, trials and sporting events on the calendar, Bizkaia will host a specific programme of activities throughout 2026 designed to celebrate this designation and promote Bizkaia Kirolur both to the public and abroad.

“From the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, we promote sport as an open and inclusive space, where everyone has a place, regardless of their gender, age, physical ability, origin or socio-economic status. That is the spirit that will prevail this year as a European Territory of Sport,” said the General Deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe.
