Which municipality in Bizkaia will be the most active this autumn?

Go back

The Bizkaia Kirolur League, organised by the Bizkaia Provincial Council, will kick off its Autumn League on 23 September. Following the high levels of participation recorded in the Spring and Summer Leagues, the challenge continues with the aim of promoting physical activity among the public through a participatory, collective approach supported by technology.

Which municipality will be crowned champion of the Autumn League?

Get involved and rack up kilometres in the Kirolur Challenge Autumn League!

Following the success of the Spring and Summer Leagues, the Kirolur Challenge is set to hold its final event of the year with the Autumn League, which will take place from 23 September to 23 October. For a month, participants will once again be logging physical activity in support of their chosen municipality and taking part in a healthy competition between municipalities across Bizkaia.

Beyond the rankings, the Kirolur Challenge is demonstrating the potential of sport as a tool for community participation. The pooling of individual efforts towards a common goal, helping the chosen municipality improve its position, is generating sustained participation and a greater commitment to active lifestyles.

Participation is open to everyone aged 14 and above, and is completely free. Participants don’t need to be officially registered as residents of the municipality they represent. Rather, anyone who feels a connection to one of the participating municipalities is free to represent it.

To join, participants must download the Wellk app (available on both iOS and Android), create a profile and select the municipality that they would like to represent. To do so, they’ll need to click on the Kirolur card that appears on the app’s home screen. Participants can log their physical activity directly using the application’s built-in GPS, or by syncing compatible services or devices such as Strava, Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Health or Google Health Connect.

Over 10,000 participant entries in the Spring and Summer Leagues

The first two phases of the Kirolur Challenge have seen impressive figures for participation and activity. Across the Spring and Summer Leagues, there were 10,396 participant entries, involving 63 municipalities, 409,797 activities and over 1.18 million kilometres covered.

In the Spring League, 60 municipalities and 5,095 people took part, recording 54,687 activities and covering more than 644,515 kilometres. Laukiz, Loiu and Karrantza were the winning municipalities in this first league.

The Summer League saw participation rise to 5,301 people across 63 municipalities. In total, 355,110 activities and 537,005 kilometres were recorded. Loiu was crowned the most active municipality in Bizkaia, followed by Laukiz and Karrantza Harana.

These results reflect the initiative’s ability to engage the public and turn everyday physical activity into a collective, participatory and healthy community experience.

A new opportunity to stay active

The Autumn League will round off the Kirolur Challenge’s annual calendar and offer a new opportunity to continue logging physical activity as people return to their routines.

Every walk, run, cycle ride or workout will once again contribute to the ranking of your chosen municipality. In this way, the challenge continues throughout the year and encourages the people of Bizkaia to adopt active lifestyles.

Prizes up for grabs

As well as the pride of seeing your municipality at the top of the rankings, there are direct incentives:

  1. Individual prizes: Participants who earn at least 300 activity points will be eligible to receive official Kirolur Challenge merchandise (while stocks assigned to each municipality last).
  2. Municipality prizes: If your municipality ranks among the best, its local council will receive funding to purchase sports equipment for local clubs.

Let’s make every step this autumn count! Sign up and help make your municipality the sporting heart of Bizkaia.

At Kirolbide PRO we encourage the people of Bizkaia to join the Kirolur Challenge and be part of this inter-municipal league, an initiative that turns everyday physical activity into a collective, participatory and healthy community experience.
