Detail

The 2nd Bizkaia Municipal Sports Managers’ Meeting, held on 27 January at the University of Deusto’s Resource Centre for Learning and Research (RCLR), had both high participation levels and a collaborative working environment, strengthening its position as a leading event for the promotion of municipal sports in the region.

The event, organised by the Directorate General of Sport of the Bizkaia Provincial Council, was framed within the context of Bizkaia as a European Region of Sport in 2026, underscoring the vital role of the local sphere as an engine of well-being, inclusion, equality, and social cohesion.

The meeting was inaugurated with the defence and presentation of the Kirolur Project, headed up by Leixuri Arrizabalaga, a Provincial Deputy from the Department of Basque Language, Culture, and Sport. During her speech, the Bizkaia Kirolur candidacy was highlighted as a strategic regional project based on institutional collaboration, social participation, and an inclusive vision towards sport.

Next, Carlos Sergio, Director General of Sport, elaborated on the lines of action to be promoted jointly with the municipalities, highlighting the need to strengthen networking, share knowledge, and align local policies with the major current challenges of the sports system. His speech served as a starting point for dialogue on the present and future state of municipal sport in Bizkaia.

After that, Javier de María, Head of the Sports Service, conveyed the key axes that will be promoted within the context of Kirolur, aimed at generating a sports landscape in Bizkaia, making visible the wide range of sports activities that take place in the territory, and defining and guiding the future of sports in a shared way. To achieve these objectives, he highlighted the importance of strengthening brand communication and dissemination of Kirolur's activities through a strategy that will include an active presence on social media, a dedicated website, and the launch of a specific email address as a direct channel for contact and participation.

Throughout the morning, the programme combined institutional interventions, group workspaces, and moments for informal exchange. These spaces allowed for the sharing of experiences, the identification of common needs, and the generation of proposals aimed at strengthening cooperation between municipalities.

The meeting’s end result was very positive, both in terms of participation and the quality of the contributions made. Those present agreed on the importance of maintaining these types of stable forums for reflection and coordination, which contribute to building a more solid, connected municipal sports system aligned with the values of Bizkaia Kirolur.

Kirolbide PRO considers this second meeting a collective success and a decisive step to continue moving forward —from the local level— in the development of a shared, inclusive, and sustainable sports model in Bizkaia.
