Detail

The Bizkaia Kirolur League, promoted by the Bizkaia Provincial Council, begins its summer phase, which will run from 15 June to 15 July. Following the success of the first phase, held in spring, the challenge continues with the aim of promoting physical activity among the public through a participatory, collective approach supported by technology

Which municipality will be crowned champion of the summer league?

The Kirolur Challenge is demonstrating the potential of sport as a tool for community participation. The pooling of individual efforts towards a common goal, helping the chosen municipality achieve the highest ranking, is generating sustained participation and a greater commitment to active lifestyles. The Kirolur Challenge summer league will begin on 15 June.

Participation is open to everyone aged 14 and above, and is completely free. Participants do not need to be officially registered as residents of a given municipality in order to represent it. Rather, any person with a connection or affinity to any of Bizkaia’s participating municipalities is free to represent it.

To join, participants must download the “Wellk” app (available on both iOS and Android), create a profile and select the municipality that they would like to represent. To do so, they’ll need to click on the Kirolur card that appears on the app’s home screen. Participants can log their physical activity directly using the application’s built-in GPS, or by syncing their Wellk account with other popular apps such as Strava, Garmin, Fitbit, Apple Health or Google Health Connect.

A spring with high participation

The spring phase of the Bizkaia Kirolur League yielded impressive figures for participation and activity. In total, 60 municipalities took part, with 5,095 people registered, 54,687 activities recorded and over 644,515 kilometres of active travel accumulated.

Laukiz, Loiu and Karrantza were the winning municipalities in this first phase. Laukiz received 1,200 euros, Loiu 600 euros and Karrantza 200 euros, sums earmarked for the purchase of sports equipment.

These results reflect the initiative’s potential to mobilise the public and foster healthy competition between municipalities, where the pooling of individual efforts contributes to a common goal.

Following the summer phase, the Bizkaia Kirolur League will conclude with a third phase in autumn, running from 23 September to 23 October. This will ensure that the challenge remains ongoing throughout the year and reinforces the adoption of active lifestyles among the population of Bizkaia.

From Kirolbide PRO, we invite the residents of Bizkaia to join the Kirolur Challenge and take part in this inter-municipal league, an initiative designed to transform daily physical activity into a collective, participatory, and healthy experience
