Detail

The evaluation committee, made up of five representatives of ACES Europe, the organisation responsible for managing this designation on behalf of the European Commission, is visiting different parts of the region with the aim of learning first-hand about Bizkaia’s sports infrastructure and assessing its suitability according to the criteria for obtaining this prestigious recognition.

The bid was announced in March by the General Deputy during the presentation of the Bizkaia Kirolak Sariak awards and represents a firm institutional commitment to promoting sport as a tool for social cohesion, health and sustainable development. The bid is presented under the name Kirolur, a play on words that reflects Bizkaia as a land of sport, on both sea and land.

During its stay in Bizkaia, the delegation is visiting various sports facilities and venues throughout the region. Among the places visited are the Jai Alai pelota court in Gernika, the Landako I and II sports centres in Durango, the recently inaugurated Ollargan Park, the Kirol Etxea building in Miribilla, Meaztegi Golf, as well as the Igeribideak, or coastal swimming routes, in Gorliz, among others.

This recognition is awarded by ACES in accordance with the principles of responsibility and ethics, conscious that sport contributes to improving quality of life, physical and mental well-being and full social integration . Bizkaia being named a European Region of Sport would represent an important boost for sporting practice in our region, while also helping to raise awareness, consolidate and promote the Provincial Council’s commitment to the values of sport and the well-being of its citizens. In the words of Gian Francesco Lupatelli, president of ACES, Bizkaia presents a bid perfectly aligned with the promotion of healthy and sustainable practices for all its citizens, with a special focus on women and functional diversity.
