The designation of Bizkaia Kirolur as a European Region of Sport for 2026 was received at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels by a delegation from the Bizkaia Provincial Council, including the Director General of Sport, Carlos Sergio, and the Head of the Sports Service, Javier de María.

This designation will allow Bizkaia to experience an exceptional year in terms of sport, in which the territory’s regular sporting activity will be showcased and made more visible, while new initiatives and events will be promoted to reinforce Bizkaia’s commitment to sport that is accessible to everyone at all stages of life.

The bid was presented to the public in March by the General Deputy, coinciding with the presentation of the Bizkaia Kirolak Sariak awards. Under the slogan Kirolur, a fusion of the words “kirol” (sport) and “lur” (land), which symbolises Bizkaia as a land of sport both at sea and inland, which reflects a firm institutional commitment to sport as a driver of social cohesion, public health and sustainable development.

Subsequently, in May, Bizkaia received a visit from a delegation from ACES Europe as part of a rigorous evaluation process. During their stay, the representatives were able to see first-hand the territory’s sporting infrastructure and assess its alignment with the demanding criteria set out by the organisation.

ACES Europe has recognised Bizkaia’s commitment to the values of sport, highlighting its role as a tool for inclusion and for improving the well-being and quality of life of its citizens. Being named a European Region of Sport will provide a decisive boost for strengthening sporting practice in the region and for raising international awareness of the Bizkaia sports and well-being model.
