The Bizkaia Provincial Council, in collaboration with the Haszten association, has produced the “Diagnostic report regarding people with functional diversity and their involvement in sport in the municipality of Berango”, a document that offers a detailed snapshot of participation levels and opportunities for improvement in inclusive sport at the local level.

The study highlights a particularly significant finding: more than half of the municipality’s sports organisations and facilities already include the active participation of people with disabilities, reflecting meaningful progress in terms of accessibility and openness within the local sports system. Among the most in-demand activities are swimming, hiking and dance, disciplines that combine physical, social and emotional benefits in terms of well-being.

Beyond analysing the current situation, the diagnostic report sets out a series of proposals aimed at consolidating and expanding this inclusive approach. Among the main areas for improvement is the need to strengthen awareness-raising actions around functional diversity, both within the sporting sphere and across the wider community.

The report also emphasises the importance of promoting specific training in adapted and inclusive physical and sporting activity, aimed at technical staff, sports organisations and other stakeholders, with the goal of ensuring safe, accessible and high-quality activities for everyone.

Lastly, it proposes the introduction of occasional shared sporting experiences with people with functional diversity as a tool to encourage direct contact, break down stereotypes and promote a sporting culture based on coexistence, equal opportunities and full participation.

This diagnostic report therefore provides a strategic foundation for continuing to move towards a more inclusive sports model in Berango, aligned with public policies on social cohesion and the promotion of physical activity for all citizens.
